Do I need my own guitar ?
Yes, you really need you own guitar.  You are welcome to use on of our guitars when you come for your first lesson, but you really need your own guitar to let you practice at home all that you learn in your lessons.

What's better - acoustic or electric guitar for beginners?

For beginners I would recommend an acoustic guitar since it is the simplest to play and maintain.  You can also learn on an electric guitar but remember you also need an amplifier and somewhere to plug in when you practice.

Do I need to be able to read music?

No.  You don't need to be able to read music notation.  In fact you don't need to know anything about music.  The great thing about the guitar is that you can start playing without knowing any music theory at all.

How young or old do I have to be?

I am happy to teach children from the age of 8 years and upward.  Children younger than 8 usually don't have enough strength in their hands to press the strings on a guitar properly, but as always there are exception. How old? - You're never too old to learn something new!  All you need is the desire to learn that will be enough.

PLEASE NOTE:
Students under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian to all lessons.

How many lessons does it take before I'll be able to play?

This question is the hardest one to answer.  You'll be playing a piece, albeit a simple piece, after your first lesson.  Different students have different speeds of learning and certain styles are easier to master than others.  I have been plying for 35 years and I still feel like there is so much more to learn.

How often should I have lessons?

In an ideal world, beginners would have lessons on a weekly basis,  However, weekly lessons are quite an expense over a month and people who work full time and /or have families can find it hard to find enough time to practice between weekly lesson, for this reason I offer weekly or fortnightly lessons and you should bear in mind these factors before deciding what is right for you.  Established players can still benefit from weekly lessons but may also want to consider fortnightly or even occasional lessons.  We can talk through your options.

How long are the lessons?

Lessons for beginners a usually a half hour long.  Intermediate and advanced players may book an hour long lesson if they wish.

Do I need to buy books or other material?

All lesson sheets, pamphlets and any CD's where needed are provided.  You do not need to buy anything extra.  The only exception to this is if you wish to take the RGT grade exams, in which case you will need to buy the official workbooks.

What do I bring to lesson?

In most cases you only need to bring your guitar and lesson material, as most prefer to use their own guitar as they are more comfortable with it.  If you have an electric guitar, you don't need to bring your amplifier or leads.  Amplification and leads and basic effects are provided.

How do I pay for lessons?

Lessons are to be paid for on the day of lesson.

What if I need to cancel a lesson?

Cancellations should be made at least 24hrs in advance.  If you fail to give me 24hrs notice the full lesson fee is payable.  If I ever have to cancel a lesson I will try and give as much notice as possible, If this happens any payments already made will be carried over to the next available slot.
You will never lose your payment.
